Going Home after a Knife Attack
Let’s take a few moments and play “Truth or Consequences.”  If attacked with a knife – it’s going to be a duel – WRONG.  During an attack, your opponent will square up with you, stand his ground, and give you ample time to both evaluate his moves and to plan your counter – WRONG AGAIN.  If you are fortunate enough to counter his first couple of moves, he will then realize your skill level and will passively stand there while you draw your blade – WRONG YET AGAIN.  And if I need to, I’ll just tackle my opponent, taking him to the ground so I can ju-jitsu all over him – WRONG ONCE MORE.The question now is “Do you want the truth?”, or are you comfortable with settling for the “consequences”?

Shivs, Shanks and Tourniquets has been designed around a two-fold objective.  First, it is structured to dispel the myths associated with knife attacks.  There is a lot of information available today, some very good but most of the material isuseless in both approach and technique.  Fantasy often has a way of running its course through Hollywood and the majority of the dojos in America today.  In reality, it’s not going to be a fight but rather an ambush or an assassination attempt on your life.  To increase your survivability, you need a solid understanding of the most common knife attacks and then develop a simple methodology to offset them.

The second objective of the class is to allow the student to gain a basic understanding of human anatomy.  An appreciation of anatomy and trauma-related issues associated with penetrating wounds is crucial when undertaking a study of knife attacks.  The material is not only useful in designing your counter attacks but is equally helpful in rendering self first-aid or in assisting others.

The material presented is not intended to be a substitute for formal knife training but rather to educate you on the difference between a committed attack on your life and the macho stupidity found in most martial venues. A good dose of reality combined with basic medical training – an important skill set for today’s warrior.
